“Original” is the most overused word in Indian phone repair. Every shop claims to use “original” parts. The truth is more nuanced — and understanding the difference helps you pay the right price for the right part.
Tier 1: Apple Genuine (Pulled or Service)
Parts that were originally produced for Apple, either pulled from a working device or provided through Apple’s service program. Same quality as factory, identical performance. Most expensive. Hardest to source in India.
Tier 2: OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)
Parts manufactured by the same vendor Apple uses (Samsung Display, LG, BOE, Foxconn assemblies). Not officially branded as Apple but functionally identical. This is what reputable independent shops use.
Tier 3: High-Grade Aftermarket (Hard OLED)
Third-party manufacturers making rigid OLED panels with proper colour and touch calibration. About 30-40% cheaper than OEM. Quality is good but may lose True Tone or auto-brightness accuracy. Suitable for budget repairs.
Tier 4: Soft OLED Aftermarket
Cheaper flexible OLED. Quality varies wildly. Some are decent, many ghost after 4-6 months. Often used by shops quoting the lowest price.
Tier 5: LCD Copy
Worst quality. Brightness uneven, colour washed out, touch inaccurate, fails fast. Often sold as “original” by shops that hope you won’t know the difference.
How to Spot Genuine OEM After Repair
Three simple tests:
- True Tone. Should appear and toggle in Control Center.
- Auto-brightness response. Cover the front sensor — brightness should smoothly drop. Aftermarket panels often jump.
- Settings → General → About. Should not show “Unknown Part” or “Non-Genuine Display” warnings.
