iPhone Got Wet? First-Aid Steps That Actually Work

May 21, 2026 · gmb.farrukhjamal@gmail.com · iPhone Repair

You dropped your iPhone in water. The next 60 minutes matter more than anything else. This guide tells you exactly what to do — and what not to do.

First 60 Seconds

  • Pull it out fast.
  • Power it off if it is still on (hold side + volume down on iPhone 8+).
  • Wipe the outside dry.
  • Pop out the SIM tray — lets some moisture escape and helps drying.

The Next 60 Minutes — What NOT to Do

  • Do not press the power button. Even “just to see if it still works”. A single press can short the board.
  • Do not charge it. Plugging in a wet iPhone is the single biggest cause of total board death.
  • Do not put it in rice. Rice is internet superstition — it absorbs surface moisture slowly and does nothing for the salts already inside.
  • Do not use a hairdryer. Heat drives water deeper.
  • Do not shake or tap it. Spreads water to dry areas of the board.
  • Do not put it in the freezer. Yes, people do this. No, it doesn’t help.

The Next 60 Minutes — What to Do

  • Place the iPhone on a clean dry surface, screen down (lets ports drain).
  • If you have silica gel (the little packets from new shoes/bags), bury the iPhone in them. Better than rice — actually absorbs moisture.
  • Call us at 080 1910 3203 or WhatsApp — we can advise based on what happened and arrange a free pickup from anywhere in Hyderabad.
  • Get the iPhone to our workshop within 24 hours for the best recovery chance.

Why 24 Hours Matters

Water exposure starts a chemical reaction the moment it touches the logic board. Salts and minerals in tap water, pool water, sea water and sweat continue to corrode the board even after the device looks dry. After 24 hours, corrosion has typically eaten into solder pads. After 72 hours, recovery rates drop sharply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my iPhone really water resistant?
Most iPhones from iPhone 7 onwards have an IP rating (IP67 or IP68) for water resistance. But: (1) the seal degrades over time. (2) Once dropped or repaired, the seal is broken. (3) IP ratings are tested in clean still water — pool chlorine, sea salt and detergents all degrade resistance faster. Treat water resistance as a one-time emergency feature, not a reason to swim with the phone.
My iPhone worked for 2 days after getting wet, then died. Can it still be saved?
Yes, often — but the corrosion has already spread. Bring it in immediately. The fact that it worked initially means most components are still functional; we typically clean the board and replace a few damaged ICs.
